The Big Boost!!!

Title of lesson plan: Self-Esteem
Subject area: social/emotional health
Grade range: 6-8 (secondary)
Time frame of lesson: 1 to 2 days
Objectives: This lesson is intended to help the students understand the notion of self-esteem. Students will discover the responsibility self esteem plays in maintaining a healthy life.
I especially enjoyed this lesson plan. I believe it is very important to have high self-esteem to accomplish goals to the best of your abilities. Students were conducted to do some critical thinking to define ‘self-esteem’. The students completed a “Personal Inventory Survey” to better understand their strengths and weaknesses. The point was made not to let others opinions are an influence of how you feel about yourself.  Several links and helpful information was provided to assist students in further research.
After the survey portion of the lesson, students were instructed to do a project explain who they are. The project choices were: collage, short essay, or drawing. The freedom for individuals to decide which manner they would complete the project open the door to a great teaching strategy. Multiple learning styles presented opportunities for diversity to be considered. The chance to be creative was endless.
Students share their projects amongst their peers in the classroom. Building communication and be expressive is a nice way to improve self-esteem. Allowing the kids to speak positively is encouraging.
They are directed to think about how self-esteem effects everyday decisions and life experiences.
The following strategies were used tat I would apply to my classroom: communication, multiple learning styles, diversity, peer encouragement, creativity, life-skills, decision making, and self development. Any of these could be used in a variety of grades and classes.
